Cadaverous

In 2004, Amlasole, a village located in the outskirts of South 24 Paraganas, witnessed 23 malnutrition deaths in a month. However, the then Government of West Bengal refused to accept malnutrition as the primary reason behind the growing number of corpses in Amlasole. Media made up trashy pieces of yellow journalism out of this starvation, opposition party thoroughly used the massacre as a means to secure their position in the upcoming election but none made any attempts to uplift the situation of Amlasole. Although Amlasole emerges as the popular “Puja theme’’, important question from the incident were asked in examinations, eventually with the passing of time new piece of “NEWS” suppresses this mishap. Debesh Chattopadhyay, in 2005, created a satirical piece of theatre to mock the role of the people in power to improve the condition of Amlasole.  Based on the workshop, this production of ‘Sansriti’ is nothing but satire made up of sticks and dupattas. Amlasole becomes ‘Hamlapol’ in “Cadaverous” and the songs are written purposefully to instigate a sense of guilt through laughter.
